The Burkittsville Ruritan Club was organized on June 23, 1953, the first of eight Ruritan Clubs chartered in Frederick County, Maryland. The Burkittsville Ruritan Club was sponsored by the Keedysville Ruritan Club in Washington County, Maryland. Rome Schwagel, a past president of Ruritan National, was the club founder. Twenty three members signed the original charter. The first meeting was held in the Parish Hall at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Burkittsville,and the club met there on the 4th Tuesday of each month, until 1969 when it purchased and renovated the former Burkittsville Elementary School at 500 East Main Street.

The Burkittsville Ruritan Club currently has 60 active and 2 honorary members.

Ruritan National was founded in 1928 in Holland, Virginia, and has grown to over 1300 clubs, in 24 states, with 30,000 members. The main goal of Ruritan is to make our communities better places in which to live, through the promotion of goodwill, fellowship and community service.
